⇒ Deepfake MrBeast Sells IPhones for $2
If you have never heard of deep fakes, you’re probably living under a rock. Deep fakes have been the newest hit, opening floodgates to scammers and pranksters on the internet. For those still confused, what are deep fakes?
Deep fakes are manipulative forms of media that use artificial intelligence to mold fake events into reality.
Recently, Youtube’s leading star, MrBeast, has tweeted about a video circulating around social media, where he was ostensibly seen giving out Iphones for $2 each. He has delivered the news to his fans through Twitter to take precautions against scams like these. In addition to this, deep fakes hasn’t only left gaping holes in society’s wallets, but also disrupted the political field. A few days prior to the general election that happened in Slovakia, an AI-generated clip of the leading candidate that sounded like they were discussing buying votes and doubling the price of beer led him to falter and lose his chance to become prime minister.
Decomposing how deep fakes are formed, we need to learn how the clever computing process called ‘Generative Adversarial Network’ (GANs) works. It’s a machine learning algorithm that generates realistic synthetic media.
GANs work by training two neural networks against each other: a generator and a discriminator. The generator's job is to create fake images or videos that are as realistic as possible. The discriminator's job is to tell the difference between real and fake images or videos.
If the discriminator correctly identifies the fake image or video, the generator is updated to try to create a more realistic fake. If the discriminator incorrectly identifies the fake image or video as real, the discriminator is updated to try to be better at telling the difference between real and fake.
This process continues until the generator is able to create fake images or videos that are so realistic that the discriminator can no longer tell the difference between real and fake. Once the GAN is trained, the generator can be used to create deepfake footage by simply feeding it a real image or video of the person whose face or voice you want to replace. The generator will then create a new fake image or video with the desired person's face or voice.
